Nancy E. Smith, 83, died Nov. 15, 2019 at the Sussman House in Rockport. She was born on April 23, 1936 in Waldoboro to Ruel and Elsie Eugley. She graduated from Waldoboro High School in 1953 and had recently attended her 66th reunion in September at the Bullwinkle’s restaurant in Waldoboro. She also attended Farmington State Teachers College.
After raising her daughters and working many years in the offices of Maritime Energy and Midcoast Mental Health, she retired at 62 from Fisher Engineering. In retirement, she loved to work in her gardens, travel and visit with friends.
Every Friday morning she would meet her friends at exercise class at the South Thomaston Methodist Church with breakfast and solving the ills of the world to follow at the Keag Store.
She looked forward to her summer visits from her niece Leeann who would always take her to eat after a day of, as she called it “dump diving.”
She recently traveled to Portland stopping in Freeport on the way back home for dinner at a BBQ restaurant called “Buck Naked”…she could not wait to tell her friends, she would smile just saying the name…
She always watched out for her friends and family, never shy to give her opinion, sometimes outspoken but always because she cared and loved them. It was her nature to take care of everyone whether she knew them or not, she also had a soft spot for all animals especially her birds, deer, turkeys and squirrels that showed up at her numerous bird feeders. Once she was your friend, it was forever.
She is survived by her daughter, April E. Burch and husband Joseph of Owls Head; grandsons Gentry O. Burch, Portsmouth, NH; McCabe W. Burch, Owls Head; daughter, Heidi S. DeCourcey; granddaughter, Hannah R. DeCourcey of Portland; son-in-law, George E. Hendron of Waldoboro; sister, Dawn Wright and husband Jeff of Nobleboro; grandson, Peter Z. Anderson; great-grandchildren, Gavin and Mylee Anderson of Rockland; niece, Leeann Figueroa and husband Carlos of Palm City, Fla.; nephew, Brent Eugley and wife Kim of Puryear, Tenn.; along with several nieces, nephews, numerous friends; and her cat, Simi.
Nancy was predeceased by daughter, Starla M. Hendron; aunt, Celia M. Eugley; brothers, Allen Eugley and Earlon Eugley; parents, Ruel and Elsie Eugley; and husband, Norris P. Smith.
