“Lived a simple life.”
Nancy “Nana” Schmehl, 91, passed away peacefully in her Bremen home of 43 years, surrounded by family. She joined her beloved husband and favorite dance partner of 60 years, Richard. Born in Elmhurst, N.Y., Nancy was a proud first generation daughter of a Swedish father and Finnish mother.
Nancy is survived by her daughters, Susan Morley and Karen Wheelock and their spouses; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Gardening was always a source of deep pleasure for Nancy as she eagerly awaited each spring for the first bits of green peeking up through the snow. She loved the home she and Dick created together on Greenland Cove.
Nancy thrived when immersed in her busy social network of friends. She was involved with the Clamshell Quilters, the Nobleboro School Buddies, Old Bristol Garden Club, Patriotic Club of Bremen, Miles Memorial Hospital League, Midwinter Network, Bremen Union Church, theater, and travel. On Saturdays you would find Nancy volunteering at the Miles Thrift Shop.
Nancy loved to create! She made beautiful quilts, folkloric paintings, exquisite colonial stenciling, and theorem painting. Her energy and passion for learning and teaching these traditional historic crafts was limitless.
We will all miss her smile, her stories, and her gusto for ice cream and milk chocolate!
In lieu of flowers, donations in Nancy’s honor may be made to the LincolnHealth – Miles Campus, ℅ Development Office, 35 Miles St., Damariscotta, ME 04543.
Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. Condolences, and messages for her family, may be expressed by visiting StrongHancock.com.
