Norman Duggan Holbrook, 78, of Bath, died April 6 at Hill House in Bath after a long battle with prostate cancer. He was born in Wiscasset May 15, 1927, the son of Ellsworth W. and Dorothy Duggan Holbrook. He had a great childhood in Wiscasset. He attended Wiscasset schools, Lincoln Academy and Maine Central Institute. While a teenager, he worked with his father in the family’s ice-harvesting business on Holbrook Pond. In April 1945, at the age of 17, he joined the Marine Corps and served as a military policeman until his discharge in January 1950. He enjoyed the time he spent serving his country and seeing different parts of the world. In 1951 he married Natalie Dowling from Wiscasset, and had four children with her. As a young family, they lived in Connecticut for a short while; then spent winters in Florida and summers in Wiscasset. Later they settled in Wiscasset year round. Over the years he worked with his father in the family lumber business, at Bath Iron Works, and painted houses. In the early 1980s, he moved to Florida and lived there for 20 years before returning to Maine in 2001. Throughout his life, he had many interests, particularly photography, flying his own airplane; building model planes, model trains and ceramics; caring for and riding his horses; and fishing on lakes and rivers in Maine and Florida. He was an avid reader and was well-versed on many topics. He was an honest and proud man, true to himself and others. For him, integrity made the person. He was predeceased by a son, Michael Allan Holbrook. Survivors include son, Norman D. Holbrook Jr. of Bath; two daughters, Jill Holbrook-Peters of Georgetown and Marji Schoeneman of Aptos, Cal.; four grandchildren; and sister, Dorothy M. Holbrook of Wiscasset.
