Olavi (Ool) Otto Miete, 90, passed away Jan. 15 at Winship Green Nursing Center, Bath.
He was born in West Alna, April 7, 1917, the son of Otto L. and Anni M. Miete. He attended West Alna Grammar School, and graduated from Wiscasset Academy in 1935.
Olavi was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in WWII from early 1942 to the end of the war. He was involved in combat action from the invasion of Casablanca through North Africa, to the invasion of Italy at Anzio and Northward, then the invasion of Southern France, advancing into Germany when the war ended.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #54 of Wiscasset.
Olavi was married to Doris E. Colby in 1946 for 25 years. He never remarried.
He worked for Haggett’s Garage in Wiscasset for many years, and also worked for Shoppe Ford and Malcolm Cadillac in Augusta. The work he enjoyed most was working in the woods, cutting logs and pulp. Olavi also worked for Chester Colby in his sawmill for about ten years. Then he worked for his brother, Paul, Sr., cutting logs and pulp into his 70’s.
He was predeceased by five siblings.
Olavi is survived by a son, Jon A. Miete and wife Merelyn of Rome; granddaughter, Jessica A. Ward; great-grandson, Matthew Jon Miete; great-granddaughter, Shauna Marie Wade, all of Ft. McCoy, Fla.; brother, Walter Miete and wife Jo of Alna; nephew, Paul Miete, Jr. and wife Shirley of Wiscasset; niece, Ann Flanders of Wiscasset; many nephews and nieces here in the U.S. and Finland; and ex-wife, Doris E. Miete of Country Manor Nursing Center, Coopers Mills.
At his request there will be no visitation or funeral. At a later date there will be a celebration of his life. Burial will be at a later date with military honors at The Alna Cemetery, Rt. 218, Alna.
