Parker Lord Spofford, 82, of Waldoboro, died April 30 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick. He was born Feb. 24, 1928 in Medford, Mass., a son of Robert and Doris Spofford. He grew up in Medford and attended local schools. He graduated from Northfield Mount Hermon School in Gill, Mass.
Parker served in the U.S. Navy. After serving in the Navy he graduated from Northeastern University in Boston with a business degree. He moved to Maine and began working with A.D. Gray Realtors in the 1950s. He eventually bought the real estate company and renamed it The Maine Way and finally Parker Spofford Realtors. He and his wife operated this company until his retirement in 2007.
He was a past president of the Lincoln County Realtors Association. He served on the planning board for the town of Waldoboro, as a selectman for two terms, as a member of the budget committee, as a sewer district trustee, as a member of the Genthner Scholarship Committee, and served as chairman of the board of selectman as well as other committees.
He loved working on his farm and enjoyed walking his dogs over the fields and woods. He especially enjoyed boating with his family and exploring the many islands of Muscongus Bay. He and his wife Pat were instrumental in acquiring local land for conservation and maintaining the beauty of the land.
Parker is survived by his wife of 38 years Pat Spofford of Waldoboro; sons, Dana and Todd Spofford of Waldoboro; step-sons, Peter and Michael Zani of California; grandchildren, Eric and Rachel Spofford of Waldoboro and Corey and Tiffany Spofford of California; great-grandchildren, Haley and Lucy Spofford of California; and many nieces and nephews.
An informal memorial gathering will be held 1-3 p.m., Thurs., June 17 at the Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro.
