Patricia C. Bangs, 67, of Gorham, died March 13 at Maine Medical Center after a long illness. Born in Friendship on March 17, 1940, she was a daughter of Elden L. and Beulah Winchenbach Cook. She graduated from Waldoboro High School and what is now the University of Southern Maine.
“Pat”, as she was known by all her friends, was a very kind and giving person. She never wanted anyone to go without and she always had a smile and a hug for those who needed one. She enjoyed knitting, gardening, and spending time at her summer home on Peabody Pond and family get-togethers.
Mrs. Bangs was a substitute teacher at many schools in the communities surrounding Gorham, but spent most of her teaching career in Windham teaching first grade. She became known at the “Mitten Lady” as she made mittens for all the first graders each year at Christmas time. She took pride that each pair of mittens used a different color scheme so that each child could identify their mittens. She also donated mittens to church organizations.
She was predeceased by a son, Stephen Bangs.
Surviving her are her husband of 50 years, George P. Bangs, Sr., of Gorham; two sons, George Bangs, Jr. and wife, Debbie of Parsonsfield and David Bangs of Windham; daughter, Cynthia Spaulding of Standish; four grandchildren, Max and Kylie Bangs of Windham and Alyssa and Travis Dunn of Standish; mother, Beulah Cook of Jefferson; brother, Louis Cook and wife, Sharon of Union; three sisters, Lalia Tanner and husband, Bruce of Orange, Cal.; Sandra Hendrix of Red Oak, Tex. and Susan Blackler of Waldoboro; and several nieces and nephews.
