Paul D. Crary, Jr., M.D., 68, passed away Feb. 27 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor, following a long illness.
Dr. Crary grew up in Fort Thomas, Ky. He graduated from Covington Latin School in 1955. He received his B.S. from Xavier University in 1959, and his M.D. from St. Louis University in 1963.
Dr. Crary joined the U.S. Navy in 1961, completing his internship and residency at the U.S. Naval Hospitals in Great Lakes, Ill., and Philadelphia, Penn., respectively. During his tenure in the Navy, Dr. Crary continued post-graduate work in the field of nuclear medicine, radiation pathology, and radiation oncology.
He was a diplomat of the American Board of Radiology and American Board of Nuclear Medicine.
Dr. Crary served as the staff radiologist at St. Elizabeth, St. Luke and Booth Memorial Hospitals in northern Kentucky from 1971-1989. He was a consultant affiliated with the University of Cincinnati Department of Radiology from 1971-1989, and served as a teacher and administrator at the Northern Kentucky University School of Radiation Technology from 1975-1989.
In 1989, Dr. Crary accepted the position of staff radiologist at Miles Hospital in Damariscotta and St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor, where he served until his retirement in 1996.
Dr. Crary served in the Navy from 1961-1971, where he earned the rank of lieutenant commander. In 1984, Dr. Crary reentered military service with the U.S. Army Reserves, serving until 1991, and achieving the rank of colonel. He returned to active duty from 1990-1991, serving as the Director of the General Diagnostic Section, Department of Radiology, Walter Reed Medical Center.
In addition to his distinguished military service, Dr. Crary served as president of the Greater Cincinnati Radiological Society and the Northern Kentucky Medical Society, and chairman of the Northern Kentucky Board of Health.
Locally, he was a member of the Boothbay Region Lions Club, American Legion Post 36, Friends of Maine Yankee, and Citizens Advisory Panel on Decommissioning Maine Yankee.
He was predeceased by infant sons, Paul III and Sean Michael; and infant daughters, Mary Ann and Kathleen.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Jo of Boothbay; daughters, Colleen Crary and husband John Platt of Boothbay Harbor, and Shannon of St. Louis, Mo.
Memorial Mass 11 a.m., Fri., March 9 at Our Lady Queen of Peace, 82 Atlantic Ave., Boothbay Harbor.
