Paul H. Steele, of Scarborough, died March 2 at the Maine Veterans’ Home with his daughters by his side.
Born in Waldoboro on June 24, 1934, he was the son of Floyd and Minnie Chickering Steele.
He attended schools in Waldoboro before moving to Freeport with his family where he graduated from Freeport High School. Paul served in the U.S. Army before attending Gorham State Teachers College where he received his teaching degree. In addition he received two masters degrees from the University of Maine.
Paul spent his career in education in the Portland school system, first as a teacher and then as a principal at several schools.
He was an avid skier, tennis player and world traveler. He was also a self-taught carpenter, building the family’s vacation home at Pleasant Mountain where he taught his daughters to ski. He belonged to the Scarborough Lions Club and Downeast Ski Club and volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and Preble Street Resource Center.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by siblings, Mary Steele Bartlett, Harwood Steele, Chesley Steele, and Robert Steele.
Paul is survived by his daughters, Jennifer Steele Skillings (James) and Kimberly Steele Sproull (Bill); grandsons, Jamie Sproull and Andrew Skillings; former wife, Diane Gagne Steele, all of Scarborough; brother, Gerald Steele (Barbara) of Winthrop; and several nieces and nephews.
A service for the family will be held at a later date.
