Paul R. Bond, 78, a lifelong member of the Jefferson community, passed away April 11 at Maine General in Augusta. He was born March 4, 1932 in Jefferson, a son of the late Willis and Ruth Hodgkins Bond.
He attended local Jefferson schools and was a graduate of Cony High School, Class of 1950.
In 1953 he joined the U.S. Navy, where he had the opportunity to travel around the world, crossing the equator, becoming a Shellback from a Pollywog; being honorably discharged in 1955.
He worked for the Department of Transportation for over 30 years retiring in 1990 as a Health and Safety director.
He was very active in the Jefferson community where he volunteered with the Boy Scouts, local schools, was a manager of the Jefferson Food Bank and on any committee asked to help with. He was active at the First Baptist Church where he sang in the choir, acted as a Deacon, Usher and treasurer; was a moderator, property committee member and organized special events teaching Sunday school and Vacation Bible School.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and was an expert cribbage player, challenging his brother-in-law, Bob Tompkins every Thursday afternoon.
He was predeceased by his brother Irvin Bond.
Survivors include sons, Steve Bond of Weeks Mills, Chris Bond of Boothbay Harbor; granddaughter, Jenny Miriam Schmidt of Germany; sisters, Martha B. Tompkins of Jefferson, Kathryn B. Maryan of Florida, Emily B. Kaune of Colorado, and Beverly B. Blair of Cape Elizabeth; many nieces and nephews; and beloved Border collie, Abby.
Visiting hours 4-6 p.m., Fri., April 16 at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. Celebration of his life 2 p.m., Sat., April 17 at the Jefferson First Baptist Church followed by a reception at the church.
