Pauline Elizabeth Barnes Powell, a lifelong resident of Damariscotta Mills, died peacefully on June 19 at Chase Point surrounded by her loving family. She was born at home in South Bristol on Dec. 31, 1929, the youngest daughter of James G. and Ethel H. Barnes.
Polly was a 1947 graduate of Lincoln Academy, retiring from Sylvania Electric Company after 30 years of dedicated service. She happily spent her retirement years driving her well-loved car all over the midcoast area. An excellent swimmer, she spent her summers at Damariscotta Lake, and at Pemaquid beach, teaching her children and grandchildren to swim.
She enjoyed having her hair and nails done, and playing Bingo and cards with friends. Most afternoons you could find her sitting at the table in the front window of the Maine Coast Book Shop Café in Damariscotta, with a book in one hand and an iced coffee (with plenty of creme and three equals!) in the other, smiling and greeting everyone who came and went. She loved nothing more than a ride to Shaw’s to feast on lobster with anyone she could talk into going she would usually treat.
There wasn’t a person who knew Polly who would ever say a negative word about her, because she never said a negative word about anyone else. She was thoughtful, even tempered, and kind to everyone.
She was predeceased by her parents; brothers, James and Morrill; and sister, Grace.
She is survived by children, Rev. Terri Powell Bracy of Warren, Mich., Richard II and Susan Powell of Nobleboro, and Tom and Karen Powell of Bangor; grandchildren, Beth and Dante DePalma of Washington, Nick and Samantha Bracy of Boston, Mass., Patty and Josh Fabel of Columbia, S.C., Amanda Chamberlain of Arlington, Va., Richard III and Nicole Powell of Jefferson, Christina Powell of Geneva, Switzerland, and Kyle Powell of Boston, Mass.; and great-grandchildren, Mikey and Autumn, who will enjoy many wonderful stories about their Grammie as they grow.
A celebration of her life was held on June 22 in Nobleboro.
