Peter Dow Melgard, 73, of Washington, died Nov. 8 at MaineGeneral Hospital in Augusta. He was born July 16, 1939 in Chicago, Ill. to Earl and Margaret Dow Melgard.
Pete graduated from Thomaston High School in 1957. He attended the University of Maine and University of Kentucky. He married his high school sweetheart, Mildred Young, in 1959. Together they raised their children in the Mid-West.
He was a plant manager for Rotation Dynamics until he retired in 2001 to Washington. He bought a 15-acre farm and raised sheep.
He participated and helped his wife as a cashier for the Evening Star Grange. He was a proud and grateful member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 26 years. He was a member of Mt. Olivet Masonic Lodge #203 in Washington. He attended the People’s United Methodist Church in Union.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mildred May Melgard of Washington; sons, Stephen Ellis Melgard and wife Tracy of St. Augustine, Fla., Richard Allan Melgard and wife Karen of Milford, Ohio, and David Earl Melgard and wife Rachel of New Fairfield, Conn.; daughter, Teresa Elizabeth Melgard Robinson and partner Kelly of Cincinnati, Ohio; brother, Stephen Christian Melgard and wife Mary of Punta Gorda, Fla. and Washington; sisters, Jean Wakefield and husband James of Punta Gorda, Fla., Andrea Weltman and husband David of Venice, Fla. and Cohasset, Mass.; 14 grandchildren; and beloved pet mini schnauzer, “Buddy.”
Friends and family are welcome to a visitation 6-8 p.m., Mon., Nov. 12 at the Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. Masonic service by Mt. Olivet Masonic Lodge #203 at 7:30 p.m. Service to celebrate Pete’s life 11 a.m., Tues., Nov. 13 at the People’s United Methodist Church, 33 Depot St., Union with Rev. George Hodgkins officiating. A reception will follow the service at the church. A private committal service will be held at the Village Cemetery in Thomaston.
