Peter Jordan, 67, a resident of Franklin, Tenn. and longtime summer resident of the Bayville Community, Boothbay Harbor, passed away July 12 at his summer residence after a period of failing health.
Peter was born July 22, 1943 in Portland, the son of Richard G. and Eleanor Wilson Jordan, attended the Hopkins Grammar School, New Haven, Conn., Dartmouth College, where he received his degree in English, and the University of Connecticut where a Doctorate in English was conferred.
After a brief time of service in the U.S. Army, he began his career as a professor of English, having most recently taught with the University of Tennessee, Nashville, and Tennessee State University. He also enjoyed writing as a freelance writer and columnist, locally penning the Bayville Beat in the Boothbay Register for many years.
An active community member, Peter was associated with the Heritage Foundation of Franklin and Williamson County, Downtown Franklin Association, Downtown Neighborhood Association, Harpeth River Association, Tennessee Land Trust and Franklin Planning Commission and also was the unofficial written word for all local and state preservation and environmental associations. He also was a member of Bayville Improvement Association, on the Board of Overseers for the community of Bayville, Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club and Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens
He enjoyed reading, hiking, boating, writing, photography, local politics and historic preservation, was known as a dog person and loved nature.
Peter was awarded a Lifetime Achievement for Community Service from Franklin Tomorrow, and also received the Patron’s Award from the Heritage Foundation of Franklin/Williamson County. It was noted that Peter’s influence helped shape both historic Franklin, Tenn. and Bayville with his quiet behind-the-scenes leadership.
He is predeceased by his father Richard G. Jordan.
Survivors include his wife Ruth (Rudy) S. Jordan of Franklin, Tenn. and Boothbay Harbor; son, Peter Wilson (Will) Jordan Jr. and wife Virginie M. Jordan; grandson, Maximilien Wilson Jordan; and son, John Parmelee Jordan and wife Stephanie W. Jordan, all of Franklin, Tenn.

Memorial service 2 p.m., Sat., July 16 at Church of All Saints By-The-Sea, followed by a gathering of friends and family at the Jordan cottage at 10 Roberts Circle, Bayville. Details of a service in Franklin, Tenn. will be announced at a later date.
