PFC Andrew Richard Small, 19, of Wiscasset, died Aug. 11 while serving with the U.S. Army supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Nangalam, Afghanistan.
He was born in Bath on June 20, 1987, a son of Terry and Cindy Small of Wiscasset.
He was employed at Canfield’s Restaurant, Wiscasset, Woolwich Dairy Queen and Nichol’s Napa, Wiscasset, before joining the U.S. Army on June 30, 2005.
He attended Wiscasset public schools, graduating from Wiscasset High School in 2005. His ‘Turning Blue’ ceremony was held on Oct. 20, 2005, where his Dad attached his blue cord to his uniform. He graduated from boot camp on Oct. 21, 2005. He was attached to the 1st. Battalion, 32nd. Infantry Regiment, 3rd. Brigade Combat Team, 10th. Mountain Division, Ft. Drum, N.Y. He was deployed for Afghanistan in March 2006 with B Company.
Last Christmas, Andrew joined his Mom and Dad along with his brother Joshua and fiancée Michelle at the home of his grandparents, Richard and Bernadine James, in Melbourne, Fla.
He enjoyed computers and the Internet (Yahoo), basketball, soccer, baseball, the Patriots and the Red Sox; because he was leaving for boot camp at the end of June, he skipped his alumni banquet, with permission to attend a Red Sox game with his family at Fenway Park. He enjoyed hunting with his Dad and brothers. He loved macaroni salad and was a great cook. He was very close to his family and loved spending time with his brother Jon at his home in West Bath. Andrew was loved by all and had an aurora of happiness.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Edwin Small.
Survivors include his parents, Terry and Cindy Small, of Wiscasset; three brothers, Matthew and wife Shawna and their children, Brian, Alyssa, Garrett and Jake of Westport Island, Jonathan of West Bath, and Joshua and fiancée Michelle Valley of Westbrook; maternal grandparents, Richard and Bernadine James of Wiscasset and Melbourne, Fla.; paternal grandmother, Barbara Small of Wiscasset; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral service with full military honors 2 p.m., Tues., Aug. 22 at the Wiscasset Community Center, 242 Gardner Rd., Wiscasset, with the Rev. Wallace E. Staples officiating.
Burial will follow with full military honors at Pine Grove Cemetery in Dresden.
