Philip E. Shaw, 78, of Connecticut and Chamberlain, died Oct. 1 from injuries sustained in an auto accident in New Harbor.
Born in Stonham, Mass., he graduated from Stonham High School and later earned his BA degree from Boston University.
A veteran of WWII, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard, including two tours to the South Pole aboard the ice cutter Southwind, one of which with Admiral Richard Byrd.
He retired in 1986 as a supervisor of Social Services for the State of Connecticut, spending time in retirement traveling and relaxing at his seasonal home, “Tukey Ledge” in Chamberlain.
Phil enjoyed political chat, and a wide range of music and cooking. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor and generosity to all whom he knew.
He is survived by his friend and life partner of 28 years, George Bentley of Hartford, Conn.; sister, Constance (Shaw) Sheridan and husband Walter of Newburyport, Mass.; niece, Jan Welch and husband Rennie of Stratham, N.H.; nephews, David Sheridan and wife Shelly of Salisbury, Mass., Michael Sheridan and wife Anne of Phoenix, Ariz., Lawrence Sheridan and fiancée Pam Bowen of No. Chelmsford, Mass., and Robert Sheridan of Manchester, N.H.
Visiting hours 3-5 p.m., Sat., Oct. 7 at Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta.
