Philip Harrington Murphy, 85, of Rice, Minn., formerly of Jefferson, died Sept. 9 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta. He was born Nov. 9, 1925 in Arnprior, Ontario, the only son of George and Ruth (Burwash) Murphy. He grew up in Maine and attended grade school in Jefferson and graduated from Cony High School in 1943.
Right after high school Phil enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving on the U.S.S. Hornet in WWII. On June 26, 1949 he married Marjorie Baldwin in Jefferson. He graduated from the University of Maine with a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1952. Phil worked his whole career in the paper industry starting with E.D. Jones in Pittsfield, Mass., and retired as Plant Engineer from Champion Paper in Sartell, Minn.
He and his wife with help from family personally built their camp on the Baldwin shores on Damariscotta Lake. They vacationed every summer on the lake.
Phil was a member of the Sigma Ki Fraternity, TAPPI and a life member of AMVETS. He enjoyed working on building projects with his family. He helped build his son Shaun’s home and worked on many other home projects with his family. He enjoyed the outdoors, playing horseshoes, gardening, traveling in his motor home and after retiring their trips to Florida and Maine.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marjorie Baldwin Murphy of Rice, Minn.; sons, Thomas Murphy and wife Joann of Lake Mills, Wis., Timothy Murphy of Pulaski, Wis., Scott Murphy and wife Kathleen of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. and Shaun Murphy and wife Louise “Sugie” of Rhinelander, Wis.; daughter, Jennifer Brandl and husband Gregory of Rice, Minn.; grandchildren, Erin, Nick, Mark, Kim, Megan, Eric and Ryan; and great-grandchildren, Madisyn and Oliver.
Navy Military Honors are planned at the Fairview Cemetery in Jefferson and a gathering for friends and family will following at the family’s camp on Damariscotta Lake in the summer of 2012. Burial will be at the cemetery in Jefferson.
