Phillip “Rusty” McGuire, 85, of Newcastle, died at his home on June 28. He was born March 16, 1928 in Orland to Cecil and Adelma Stockbridge McGuire. He had to leave 6th grade to help support the family and find work.
As a young man he played guitar with his father and brother, Al “Walbash” McGuire and was known as “Uncle Mac and His Westerners.” They played on the Augusta radio station and at many area dance halls around Maine. He married Priscilla June Sprague on Sept. 2, 1948 and they had a daughter, Sheena.
Rusty worked various jobs in sawmills and worked for Richard R. Storer for 30 years until he retired. Some of the projects he worked on included University of Maine at Orono Auditorium, Great Salt Bay School, Wiscasset Middle School and numerous other projects. He was an excellent finish carpenter.
He also played drums for the country group, “The Amigos,” from Boothbay and they played dances all over Maine. Rusty loved music, playing beano, hunting, fishing and loved his family. After his wife passed away, he met Priscilla Reed, who would become his companion of 30 years.
He was predeceased by his parents; wife, Priscilla McGuire; brothers, Earl, Al and Edward McGuire; and longtime companion, Priscilla Reed.
He is survived by his daughter, Sheena Cunningham and husband Frank of Nobleboro; grandchildren, Steve Moulton of Waldoboro, and Shawn Moulton of Nobleboro; great-grandson, Gavin Grindal of Waldoboro; step-sons, Randy Reed and wife Jeanette of Wiscasset, and Bradford Reed and wife Roberta of Boothbay; step-daughter, Winiford Roussell and husband Ronny of New Hampshire; and step-grandchildren, Amanda Kenney of Woolwich, and Jacob Reed of Newcastle.
The family will have a private gathering.
