Phoebe A. Cromwell, 79, a lifelong resident of Westport Island, died Oct. 24 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.
She was born in Lewiston on Aug. 26, 1939, a daughter of Walter E. and Nina (Brown) Greenleaf.
She attended Westport Island School and graduated from Morse High School in the class of 1958. On March 7, 1959 she married Francis Cromwell. Besides raising her family she was a bookkeeper for her husband’s business, Frank Cromwell Construction. They built, owned, and operated the Westport Barn General Store.
She was a sister of Beta Sigma Phi Alpha Iota.
She enjoyed bowling, cribbage, cards, puzzle books, knitting, quilting, working in her woodwork shop, hunting (bagged many deer and a bear), and spending time at camp up north. She especially enjoyed spending time with family and grandchildren.
She was predeceased by husband, Francis Cromwell on Jan. 31, 2009; and brother, Stephen Greenleaf.
She is survived by sons, Larry Cromwell, and Tim Cromwell and wife Sue, all of Westport Island; daughters, Elaine C. Nichols and husband Todd of Westport Island, and Peggy S. Averill and husband Wayne of Alna; brothers, Eben Greenleaf and wife Robbie, and Murlyn Greenleaf, all of Westport Island; grandchildren, Kirby Nichols, Tyler Nichols, Audrey and Josh Blagdon, Sumner and Melissa Averill, Ryan and Jamie Cromwell, and Victoria Cromwell; seven great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and best friend, Simon.
