Phyllis Colby Hodgdon Mortimer, of Westport Island, passed away on Feb. 25 with her family by her side. Phyllis was born on April 30, 1929, to Florence and Royden Colby in Foxboro, Mass.
Phyllis graduated from Foxboro High School in 1947. After graduation she worked for the Foxboro Company as a clerk until her marriage to Paul L. Hodgdon.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was happiest when surrounded by her family and always displayed a wonderful sense of humor. She loved music and entertained the family for many years playing the piano and the accordion. Phyllis played the piano for many years at The Wiscasset Bible Baptist Church. She was the town clerk of Westport Island for 43 years.
When she wasn’t working, she loved baking and decorating cakes. For many years she baked pies, breads and doughnuts for a few area restaurants. She also worked as a cook at the Rocktide Restaurant in Boothbay Harbor and later worked at a bakery shop in Wiscasset.
Phyllis’s hands were never idle and she was full of creative ideas, so you would often find her busy in the kitchen baking along with her talent to make lovely things for all her children and grandchildren that she had knitted or crocheted.
She was a member of The Eastern Star, Wiscasset Lodge, as well as a member of the Woolwich-Wiscasset Baptist Church.
She was predeceased by her husbands, Frederick Mortimer, and Paul L. Hodgdon; and son, Alan J. Hodgdon.
She is survived by children, Paul K. and wife Linda Hodgdon of Las Vegas, Nev., Linda and husband William DeLong, Donna L. Gregory, Alan’s wife Sarah Hodgdon, all of Westport Island, Karen Hodgdon and companion Kosta Kroustellis of Kennebunkport, Dale Hodgdon and companion Leslie Lapierre of Topsham, Gail and husband Robert Craft, and Beverly Hodgdon, all of Covington, Va.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
By Phyllis’ request, there will be a private funeral and service for family only. Friends may pay their respects at the home of Linda and Bill DeLong, 154 Main Rd., Westport Island. There will be a celebration of life to follow in the spring.
