Polly Smith, 89, of Nobleboro, passed away peacefully on June 30 at her daughter’s home on Pemaquid Lake.
Born Dec. 8, 1919 in Newburyport, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Lloyd A. and Madge H. Boyden, the third of five children who grew up in So. Easton, Hanson, and East Bridgewater, Mass.
She attended local schools, worked in the area following school, and at the close of WWII, married her beloved Walter A. Smith on Feb. 22, 1946. After several years in Massachusetts, Polly helped her husband achieve his dream of moving to Maine, and they purchased a rundown farm in Nobleboro in 1950. They were finally able to make it habitable, moving in full-time in 1952.
Polly’s faith was the centerpiece of her life, and she soon became involved in the First Baptist Church of Nobleboro as a member, Sunday School teacher, and best known as its pianist, organist, and choir director for decades.
While thinking of herself primarily as a homemaker, she was indeed a talented musician, a gifted craftsperson, known for her beautiful candles sold at her Duck Puddle Shop for many years. A wonderful chef, she cooked for several years at Miles Hospital, later as housekeeper for authors Henry Beston and Elizabeth Coatsworth.
Predeceased by three sisters and her husband of 53 years, Polly is survived by her brother, Lloyd Boyden, Jr. of Preston, Conn.; daughter, Carolyn and son-in-law Clete Baltes of Nobleboro; grandchildren, Dr. Kimberly Knowlton Waters and spouse Keith of Milford, N.H., Aaron Baltes and wife Kathy, Jason Baltes and fiancée Erin Campbell, all of Portland; and great-grandchildren, Ellie, Meg, and Matthew Baltes, Kaitlyn, Kelci, and Kortney Waters.
Memorial service 2 p.m., Fri., July 24 at the First Baptist Church in Nobleboro.
Gifts in Polly’s memory may be made to our heroes, the First Responders, c/o Nobleboro Town Office, 192 US Hwy 1, Nobleboro, ME 04555.
