Ralph L. Spinney, 84, of Southport, passed away in his home on May 27 after a short illness, four days short of his 85th birthday.
Born June 1, 1928, he was the son of Edwin and Eva Tilton Spinney of West Boothbay Harbor. After graduating the Boothbay schools, he married Marilyn Sherman of Southport on June 20, 1947.
A long time employee of Central Maine Power, he and Marilyn made their home on Southport until he was promoted to the CMP District Manager in Richmond.
In 1973 he retired from CMP and returned to his current home on Hendricks Hill Road where he joined his son in forming Harbor Electric. For more than the past 20 years he been the Code Enforcement/Building Inspector for the Town of Southport, a position that he truly loved.
He has been a lifelong member of the Southport Fire Department and deeply involved in the town’s activities and people throughout his life. The Town of Southport honored him in the Annual Town Report in 2006. A Registered Maine Guide, he was an avid outdoorsman. Even as the hours of snowmobile treks and hunting/fishing expeditions to Alaska diminished, he treasured the quieter times at his Rangeley camp with his boat, fishing, hunting and relaxing hours on his camp porch. He and Marilyn also enjoyed days spent at auctions, garage sales and flea markets as she collected treasures that included dolls and thimbles while he collected tools.
He was predeceased by sister, Ruby; infant daughter, Rosemary; grandson, Jason in 1983 and his beloved wife of 62 years, Marilyn in 2010.
He is survived by his son, Ronald and wife Nancy of Southport; granddaughter, Jennifer Anne of Boulder, Col.; grandson, Jeff and wife Melissa; great-grandson, Chase of Alna; as well as Buddy, the family pug.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the Southport Fire Department, the Southport Methodist Church, or the Jason Edwin Spinney Scholarship at the Boothbay Region Student Aid Fund.
A celebration of life will be held at noon, Fri., May 31 at the Southport United Methodist Church.
