Ralph L. Sweeney, 85, of Dresden, passed away at home on July 6, following a brief illness.
He was born in Orange, Mass., on Sept. 12, 1922, the son of the late Peter and Isabelle Sweeney.
Mr. Sweeney served in both the Army and the Air Force, retiring after 20 years of service to his country. He worked in the electrical and plumbing fields and was employed by Bath Iron Works.
He was a member of Saint Ambrose Catholic Church in Richmond and a fourth degree Knight of Columbus. He was also a member of the Richmond Senior Citizens and American Legion Post 132. Ralph was a volunteer fireman in Warner, N.H., and Dresden.
He loved crossword puzzles, solitaire, mahjong and other puzzles, as well as a good bingo game.
Mr. Sweeney is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Ida (Robbins) Sweeney of Dresden; sons, Roger Sweeney and wife Mary Beth of Nashua, N.H., and Barry Sweeney and wife Rachel of Reston, Va.; daughter, Joan Sweeney of Salem, Mass.; sister, Mrs. Bernice Jennings of East Bridgewater, Mass.; grandchildren, Sean and Jordana Sweeney of Reston, Va.; and close friend, Kristopher Favreau of Bowdoinham.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the staffs of Mid-Coast Hospital, Martins Point, and CHANS.
At his request, there will be no visiting hours or funeral service. There will be a private interment at the Maine Veterans’ Cemetery.
A Memorial Mass will be scheduled at a later date.
