Ralph Lombardi, of Edgecomb, died on Nov. 4 with his family and loving caregivers at his side. His death followed a long period of diminished mobility and inability to communicate, which, however frustrating, he faced with an astonishing level of equanimity and grace, traits which would not surprise those who knew him throughout his life. He consistently met whatever challenges confronted him with a level courage and strength of will that served him and those he cared for, so very well.
His wife Maggie died in August of 2010.
His highest priority after his family, wherever he found himself, was service to his community and to those in need, whether it be to inner city Boston kids; Hungarian refugees in the 50s; Vietnamese immigrants in the 60s and 70s; the homeless; the imprisoned; teaching emergency medical volunteers; his years in devoted service as church warden; his service on countless town boards, commissions, and committees – the list goes on. Where there was a need, he did his best to make a meaningful contribution.
One of his proudest accomplishments late in life in his real estate career was his work with Maine lobstermen, and his role in facilitating the establishment of working waterfront in the midcoast.
He and Maggie made a difference in whatever lives and places they touched, and their startlingly loving relationship of over 62 years was an inspiration to all who knew them.
Their ashes will be scattered by their three sons and their families at the family camp on Indian Pond, just the other side of Squaw Mountain from where they first met, on Moosehead Lake, in 1941.
They are much loved and will be greatly missed.
Any donations in Ralph’s memory would be greatly appreciated and might be made to Tedford Housing, P.O. Box 958, Brunswick, ME 04011.
