Raymond H. Ripley Jr., 90, formerly of Wellesley, Mass., died Aug. 8 at St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor.
Ray was born March 3, 1923 in Watertown, Mass., one of six children to Raymond H. Ripley Sr. and Gertrude Gardner Ripley. Ray graduated from Belmont High School in the class of 1940. He graduated from Harvard College in June 1947 after serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII as the Class of 1945.
He worked at S.D. Warren Paper Company from 1946 to 1982 as a customer service manager.
Ray enjoyed needlework, carpentry and gardening. He had a strong love of golf and enjoyed playing the sport as well as teaching the game to others. Ray was a longtime member of the Boothbay Country Club. He enjoyed (depending on the season) all New England sports teams especially the Red Sox and Bruins. Ray was a true fan through the good seasons and the tough ones as well.
Ray was very active in the Ocean Point community where he was a resident for 37 years. He was treasurer of the Ocean Point Colony Trust for 27 years. He also served on the Lincoln Arts Festival Board of Directors and sang in the chorus every August.
He was predeceased by his sister, Ruth.
Ray is survived by his wife of 68 years, Barbara (Lee) Ripley of Boothbay Harbor; two sets of twin brothers and sisters, Philip and Phyllis and David and Dorothy; sons, Leland G. Ripley of Duval, Wash., David L. Ripley and wife Pam of Humble, Tex., and Peter B. Ripley and wife Mary of East Boothbay; and special grandchildren, Chris of Lake Stevens, Wash., Scott and wife Katie of St. Petersburg, Fla., Amanda of Collegeville, Penn., and Nicholas and Victoria Dunbar of East Boothbay.
Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m., Tues., Aug. 13 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Rd., Boothbay. A service to celebrate Ray’s life will be held 11 a.m., Wed., Aug. 14 at the Wilson Memorial Chapel at Ocean Point, East Boothbay, followed by a reception at the Ocean Point Casino. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Boothbay.
