Raymond Hilton True passed away peacefully from complications of Alzheimer’s at Cove’s Edge nursing home in Damariscotta on Dec. 18.
He was born in Augusta on July 31, 1924, to Shirley and Walter True. Ray graduated from Cony High School with the class of 1942 and attended the University of Maine before enlisting in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Raymond served as a Pharmacist’s mate in the Pacific aboard the L.S.T. 667, the second most decorated L.S.T. of the war.
Upon his discharge from the service, Raymond married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Jackson of Augusta, and moved to Boston to attend the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy where he was a member of the Phi Delta Chi Fraternity and the National Honor Society. He was a member of the American Pharmaceutical Association and the Maine Pharmaceutical Association. He was a long time member of the Oakland Lions Club, the Bethlehem Masonic Lodge #35, and Oakland Universalist Church.
In retirement, Ray enjoyed sailing, camping and traveling and was an active member in a variety of clubs, including first aid responder, amateur radio, model yacht, power squadron, historical society, and square dancing and was a frequent volunteer at local hospitals.
Raymond was a gentle man whose actions defined his strength of character. He will be remembered for his patience, humor, kindness, and contagious smile.
Ray is survived by his loving wife Marilyn of 63 years who resides at Chase Point in Damariscotta; daughters, Alyson True and partner Lisa Scott of Jefferson, and Laurel Powers and husband Mark of Oakland; sons, Jeffrey True and wife Kim of North Yarmouth, and Daniel True of West Bath; niece, Meredith Coates and husband Rob of Litchfield; grandchildren, Cari Powers of Franklin, Mass., Emily True of Brighton, Mass.; Richard Powers and wife Laura of San Diego, Cal,; Benjamin True of Eugene, Ore., and Asiah Wilmot of Jefferson.
Calling hours 1-3 p.m., Sat., Jan. 2 at the Wheeler Funeral Home in Oakland.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jefferson Fire and Rescue or to the Jefferson Historical Society.
