Professor Raymond Otto “Hans” Hilgermann, Ph.D., 60, died unexpectedly at his home in Bremen on April 20.
He was born in Oak Park, Ill. on Feb. 15, 1947, to Leonard O. Hilgermann, Sr. and Anna E. (Melle) Hilgermann.
Hans received degrees in European History and Communications from Northwestern University and the University of Maine. He pursued graduate studies in Higher Education and Episcopal Theology at the University of Chicago and Harvard University. While at Northwestern, he conducted reading classes for inner city youth.
During his career, he was the director of Northwestern University’s Reading Program, served as president of the Wellness Council of Greater Boston, and ran his own management consulting firm, R. Hilgermann & Associates. He was also the author of two books, Reading as Problem Solving, and Goal Management at Work.
Throughout his life, Hans took great pleasure in reading, classical music, European travels, and nature walks. His property in Bremen was a source of peace and healing for him as he carried out restoration and improvement projects over the years. He took special pride in the magnificent, ancient elm tree that stood in front of the house. He was also deeply involved in the study of Practical Theology, as well as researching the life and career of his great-great-uncle, Bishop Otto Melle of Germany.
He was predeceased by his father in 1998.
Hans is survived by his mother and brother, Leonard O. Hilgermann, Jr., both of Seattle, Wash.; his beloved dog, Ralph; and many relatives in the Chicago area, and elsewhere in the United States and Germany.
Interment was in the German Cemetery in Waldoboro.
A memorial service will be conducted in Seattle at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements were entrusted to Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.
