Raymond L. Stone, MD, 87, a charter member of the American Academy of Family Practice, died Sept. 22 at the Benedictine Hospital after a long battle with cancer. He and his wife Muriel maintained a home in Highmount, N.Y. and were previously residents of Elizabeth, N.J.
Dr. Stone practiced medicine since 1950 and was active in state and national medical societies for over 50 years; including Union County and New Jersey Medical Societies and the American Medical Association.
A graduate of Hahnemann Medical College (Philadelphia, Penn.), Dr. Stone pursued and promoted continuing medical education throughout his career, including holding committee membership at Seton Hall University s Graduate School of Medical Education. As a member of the American Academy of Family Practice, he recently challenged himself by maintaining certification, an octogenarian competing against newly minted doctors.
Dr. Stone was also a former member of the Elizabeth (N.J.) Board of Health, a former Chief of the Department of Family Practice at Elizabeth General Hospital, and an attending physician of same department at St. Elizabeth Hospital.
An avid skier and tennis player, Dr. Stone and his wife competed in the Senior Olympics in tennis, and together skied throughout North America. Raymond, a WWII veteran, was deployed as an Army cryptographer for four years, with postings that included The Arctic Circle (near The North Pole), Sweden and England.
Survivors also include sons, Andrew R. Stone of New Jersey, David J. Stone of New York, and Gary E. Stone of Newcastle; daughters, Eileen D. Stone of Lafayette, N.Y. and Audrey R. Stone of Glen Ridge, N.J.; and six grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
Dr. Stone’s funeral procession will form 11 a.m., Wed., Sept. 24 at the B’nai Israel Congregation Synagogue on Wagner Avenue Fleischmanns, then to the B’nai Israel Cemetery in Clovesville for a graveside ceremony. To light a memorial candle, please visit www.gormleyfuneralhome.com.
