Reid Harvison Porter, 83, died unexpectedly on Aug. 20 at the MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.
Reid was born on Nov. 14, 1926, in Kearney, N.J., as the only son of M. Harvison and Isobel Anderson Porter. Reid graduated from Moorestown High School, Moorestown, NJ, in 1944 and subsequently served in the Army Air Corps during the U.S. occupation of Japan at the end of World War II. In 1948, he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Ann Ballantyne. He attended Ursinus College and went on to graduate from the University of Pennsylvania Dental School with the class of 1952. Reid was an accomplished professional who thoroughly enjoyed dentistry while often forming long lasting relationships with many patients during his 37 years in private practice.
After retiring in 1989, Reid continued to pursue his hobbies of golf and WWII history. He and Mary Ann resided in Venice, Fla. during the winter months and spent each summer in a cottage overlooking Lake Damariscotta in Jefferson.
Reid was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved sister, Jean Porter Hess.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Mary Ann; son and daughter-in-law, Steven Reid Porter and Georgene V. Porter of Springfield, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Bradford James Porter of Audubon, N.J. and Ellen Richey Porter of Haddonfield, N.J.; grandchildren, Sarah Elise Porter, Matthew Richey Porter, and Patrick Reid Porter, all of Haddonfield, N.J.
Memorial service is planned for October at the First Presbyterian Church in Moorestown, N.J.
