Richard Bradley Hemingway, 89, died peacefully in his sleep at home the morning of Oct. 19 of natural causes. Mr. Hemingway was born on Aug. 11, 1923 in Syracuse, N.Y., the son of the late Stuart Clayton Hemingway and Madaline Cooney Hemingway.
Mr. Hemingway graduated from The Hotchkiss School and Yale University (Class of 1945). He was a pilot in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII (1942 to 1946) and the Korean War (1952 to 1954) attaining the rank of captain. He had a long and successful career as an independent oil and gas operator in Houston. He was a member of the Bayou Club and the former Tejas Club and for many years attended the Fourth Church of Christ, Scientist in Houston. Mr. Hemingway spent his summers at his residence on the coast of Maine.
He was predeceased by brothers, John C. Hemingway, Stuart C. Hemingway and Bradley T. Hemingway and sisters, Ann H. Symington, Caroline H. Norton and Madeleine H. Ryan.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Aileen Doolittle Hemingway; daughter, Mary Stuart Hemingway Crain and husband John of Dallas, Tex., and their children, Matthew and wife, Christina, Sarah Hambric and husband, Preston, and Margaret; son, Richard B. Hemingway Jr. and wife Patti of Houston, Tex., and their children, Caroline Harrell and husband, John, Helen and Madeline; son, Andrew D. Hemingway and his wife Camilla of Barrington, R.I., and their children, Andrew and William; son, Thomas B. Hemingway and wife Amy of Houston, Tex., and their children, James and George; granddaughters, Elizabeth and Laura Hemingway; great-grandchildren, Jackson Crain and Rose Hambric; numerous nieces and nephews; sister, Jean S. Hemingway of Rumford, R.I.; and sister-in-law, Mary Louise Hemingway of Hillsdale, N.J.
Memorial service 3 p.m., Sat., Oct. 27 in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Dr., Houston, where Dr. William Heston, Executive Pastor of First Presbyterian Church, is to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent grand foyer.
Mr. Hemingway will be buried during a private service in Waldoboro at a date to be determined.
