Richard “Dick” Stockton Vogels, 82, of Newcastle, passed away on Nov. 10 at home, surrounded by his family and his dogs.
Dick founded the Challenger Scholarship Fund, which he established at the Maine Community Foundation in December 1995. The fund, which honors the crew of the Space Shuttle Challenger, supports exceptionally talented public elementary school graduates who reside in Maine to attend a private secondary school in Maine. Dick has changed the lives of dozens of students, and his generosity will continue in perpetuity.
Dick loved sailing, gardening, and the outdoors. He was an active volunteer at Dodge Point, building and maintaining trails, and he taught boating skills with the Coast Guard Auxiliary for many years.
Gifts in his memory can be made to the Maine Community Foundation in the name of the Challenger Scholarship Fund.
