Richard “Earl” Brown, 82, died on June 24. He was born in Boothbay Harbor on Sept. 28, 1930, to Edmund and Viola Brown. He attended Boothbay Harbor High School and graduated with the class of 1948. Earl enlisted with the Navy and served in Korea during the war. He later transferred to the Air Force where he enjoyed working as a mechanic on the ‘new’ jet engines.
After the service Earl returned to Boothbay Harbor where he worked at the family restaurant, Brown’s Wharf. In 1976 Earl moved to Florida, but it wasn’t long before he missed Maine and started back up the coast and stopping in Arlington, Va., where he found a job as a chef at the Market Inn, in Washington, D.C.
It was back to Maine in the 80s where he became the captain of the Theresa, a Tioga Research boat, providing ocean research information for colleges.
His favorite story was finding a helicopter in the Long Island Sound. Always one to find new ventures, Earl began transporting new, sporty yachts from Boston to Fort Lauderdale and Miami. He loved being in the sea.
Over the years Earl made many contributions to the Boothbay Harbor community. He was a selectman in Boothbay Harbor for nine years and only missed one meeting during that time, of which he was very proud. For many years he was the harbor master of Boothbay Harbor and spent many mornings as a school bus driver. He was a standing member of the American Legion and was a Mason.
Earl was known for his baked stuffed lobster, lobster thermador and his favorite, Fin and Haddy. Earl loved his faithful companion, “Cappy.” Earl was one of a kind; a great dad who made many sacrifices for his children.
He was predeceased by brothers, Lee, David and Errol Brown; sons, Scott Richard Brown, Dean Lawrence, and Hutchins Brown; and granddaughter, Sarah Kristen Brown.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra Curtis Brown; daughters, Arlene and husband Walter Cole, and Jennifer Hutchins and companion Steve Overlook; sons, Dwight and wife Noreen Brown, Steven and wife Kimberley Brown, and John Hutchins; grandchildren, Scott Brown, Marcia Garnecky, Heather Farmer, Melissa Payne, Jessica Brown, Jesse Weeks, Jamie Weeks, Riley Overlook, Brandon Hutchins, and Cheyenne Hutchins; and great-grandchildren, Gabrielle Lewis, Gaige Garnecky, Willow Garnecky, Raven Farmer, Madison Payne, Cali Brown and Chloe Watson.
