Richard Everett Simmons, of Friendship, died unexpectedly Feb. 6 at his home. He was born Aug. 25, 1946 in Damariscotta to Amos and Bertha Simmons. He graduated from Medomak Valley High School and entered the Army right out of school. He served with the Army during Vietnam and received the Purple Heart after being wounded in combat during his second tour of duty. Richard worked for Marine Paving driving a truck as well as for George C. Hall, and was a plumber.
Richard was an avid fisherman. He and his brothers fished for bass and they loved spending time hunting. Richard always carried two things in his wallet: his fishing license and a picture of his niece, Shylo. He loved flying model airplanes with his good friend Bud Greenleaf. Richard was loved by everyone who ever met him and will be greatly missed.
Richard is predeceased by his parents; and brothers, Albert and Roger Simmons.
He is survived by his nieces, Juanita Simmons and Shylo Wall of Waldoboro, Amy Simmons of Augusta, Beth Simmons of Friendship, and Suzette and her husband Mark Rumney of Belfast; nephews, Roger Jr. and his significant other Tina of Rockland, and Harlan and wife Kim Simmons of Friendship; sister-in-law Linda Simmons of Warren; special friend Meredith; and step-children, Crystal, Michael, James, and Kathy.
A gathering to celebrate Richard’s life will be held at 3 p.m., Sun., July 19 at Walker Beach in Friendship.
