Richard Franklin Mason, of Damariscotta, formerly of Readfield, passed away on Sept. 19 at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta.
He was born Jan. 12, 1923 in Augusta, the son of Arthur B. and Florence (Condon) Mason.
Following graduation from Cony High School in 1941, he attended the University of Maine in Orono for one year, leaving to enlist in the Army during WWII. He served overseas in the E.T.O until 1946, and then returned to the University of Maine to graduate in 1949.
In 1952, he was employed as an engineer at American Steel and Wire, Division of U.S. Steel, in Worcester, Mass. In 1954, he became an engineer for the Maine Public Utilities Commission, retiring as Chief of the Water and Sewer Division in 1977. After retiring, he was self-employed as a water rate consultant and remained a member of the Maine Association of Professional Engineers.
Following the passing of his wife, Suzanne Maddocks Mason in 2011, he moved to Newcastle/Damariscotta, where he spent his remaining days until a brief stay at the Maine Veterans Home.
He is survived by his brother, Charles L. Mason of Freemont, Cal.; sister, Barbara Smith of Townsend, Del.; sons, Richard and wife Beverly Mason of Venice, Fla., John and wife Margaret Mason of Kennebunk, and Alan Mason and Ann Jackson of Damariscotta; three grandsons; one granddaughter; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Sat., Oct. 10 at the Hallowell Cemetery.
