Richard Lee Hawkins, Jr., of Portland, died at home on Oct. 25, after a four year battle with infection and disease. He was born Dec. 8, 1959 in Ft. Eustis, Va., the son of Richard and Barbara Hawkins. In 1972 the family moved to South Bristol; Rich graduated from Lincoln Academy in 1976. He was a loving husband, father, son, and friend. He was a stranger to no one, a gentle person, a strong person, a very knowledgeable, witty, and artistic person, a true scholar, never losing his quest for knowledge. He loved fishing, painting, and was an accomplished cook.
He is survived by his wife, Kate; sons, Ryan, a senior at Deering High School, and Michael of San Luis Obispo, Cal., and daughter, Christine, a nursing student at USM; sister, Kathleen LeBree of Thomaston; mother and stepfather, Barbara and Cary Haupt of Tenants Harbor; and aunt, Martha and uncle, Herk.
Celebration of his life for friends and family will be held on his 50th birthday.
