Richard M. Genthner, a lifetime resident of Waldoboro, and well respected oil dealer in town, died Jan. 26 at his residence after a long period of failing health surrounded by his family.
Richard was born Feb. 28, 1928 in Waldoboro, the son of Roland and Annie Pettee Genthner, and was a graduate of Waldoboro High School, class of 1946. He also graduated from Kennebec School of Commerce in Gardiner, and attended Bentley College.
He joined the U.S. Army in 1950, and served in Co. B, 193rd Tank Battalion, serving a year in Korea.
After his discharge in 1956, he returned to Waldoboro, where his entrepreneurial drive led him to open a local bowling lane with his brother, and he became president of Genthner Oil Co. upon the death of his father, serving in that capacity until the time of his death.
He was a member of the Charles C. Lilly American Legion Post in Waldoboro, and the Waldoboro Lions Club, and has operated the Riverside Cemetery Association for many years. An avid hunter, he enjoyed hunting deer, birds and rabbits, raised pheasants for the Waldoboro Fish & Game Association, was a member of that association for many years, participated in many rifle and pistol shooting competitions, enjoyed bowling and competed on many leagues in Waldoboro, and anonymously helped many people in town who needed a little lift.
He is predeceased by his wife, Georgia Leavitt Genthner; parents and a brother, Edward Genthner.
Survivors include daughter, Rachel Genthner of Waldoboro; grandsons, Richard Genthner of Waldoboro, and Edward Genthner of Jefferson; brother, Warren Genthner of Waldoboro; and sister, Avis Swift of Cumberland.
Friends may call 6-8 p.m., Thurs., Feb. 4 at the Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. Celebration of Richard’s life 12 p.m., Fri., Feb. 5 at the Broad Bay Congregational Church, 947 Main St., Waldoboro. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Waldoboro.
