Richard Orvis Callahan, 84, of Round Pond, passed away on the morning of May 21 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. The son of Leon O. and Myrtle (Pendleton) Callahan, he was born in Wellington on April 18, 1922.
Attending schools in Rockland, he entered the U.S. Army, serving honorably during WWII. Following his discharge, he worked as a well driller in the region for many years. He also worked at Bath Iron Works and for several years operated his lumber mill.
Mr. Callahan was a member of the Seaside Grange in Bristol, Lincoln Pomona, Maine State Grange, and a longtime member of Mariners Lodge, I.O.O.F., Round Pond. He was a member of the Samoset Fish and Game Club in Bristol, and Wells-Hussey American Legion Post #42 in Damariscotta. Following his retirement, he continued to enjoy woodworking and was known for his beautiful hooked rugs. He loved time with his family and working around his home, yard and vegetable garden.
Mr. Callahan leaves his loving wife of 53 years, Bethiah (Steer) Callahan of Round Pond; daughter, Peggy Ann Olson and husband Robert of Round Pond; son, Floyd of Portland; daughter-in-law, Leigh Callahan of Woolwich; two sisters, Louise Cole of Warren and Mary Rose of East Hampton, Conn.; and four grandchildren, Joshua Callahan, Thomas Callahan, Samantha Grant, and Alec Olson.
He was predeceased by son Richard, Jr. in 2000, as well as brothers Sheridan, Malcolm, and Clyde, and sister Evelyn Richards.
Service to honor Mr. Callahan will be 1 p.m., Thurs., May 25 at Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta with Rev. Nancy Salisbury officiating. He will be laid to rest at Chamberlain Cemetery, Round Pond.
