Richard E. Reed, 74, of Boothbay Harbor, died June 28 at his daughter’s home in Cumberland. He was born Jan. 23, 1934 in Boothbay Harbor, a son of George Reed, Jr. and Phyllis Hodgdon Reed. He grew up in Boothbay Harbor and attended local schools. He graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School in the class of 1952. He was a basketball star during his high school years. He attended S.M.V.T.I in South Portland.
He worked as a machinist at Maine Yankee in Wiscasset for 28 years. He later worked for Hodgkins Machinery in Randolph for nine years. He also owned and operated the Boothbay Dairy Freeze for 12 years.
He built a home for his family, which they have lived in for the last 45 years. He loved the outdoors all year round. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also loved working and planting his gardens each year.
Richard was predeceased by a daughter, Laurie Reed and son, George Reed III.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Suzanne Greenleaf Reed of Boothbay Harbor; daughter, Colette Howell and husband Paul of Cumberland; son, Michael Reed of Alaska; four grandchildren, Jessica Reed of South Portland, Jonathan Richard Howell of Cumberland, Benjamin Scott Howell of Cumberland, and Ellie Marie Howell of Cumberland; daughter-in-law, Maryann Reed of South Portland, and numerous family and friends.
Funeral July 2 at the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor. Burial followed in the Oceanview Cemetery in Boothbay.
