Richard Thomas Lozier, 81, of Friendship, passed away on Sept. 14. He was born on June 26, 1928 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., the son of Russell Lozier and Sophie (Thomas) Lozier, and brother of Paul and Charlotte.
Richard (Dick) attended schools in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. and graduated from high school in 1946. After graduation he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed at Ft. Knox, Ky. and then in Yokahama, Japan. Upon his return in 1948, he attended the Hudson River School of Nursing in Poughkeepsie receiving his RN degree, and then went on to teach psychiatric nursing at the school for over 25 years, before he retired in 1978.
He met and married Barbara Martin in 1954, they had two children, Karen and Scott. Following their divorce and his retirement, Dick decided to move to Friendship, working for Coastal Fisheries, and for a number of years, maintained one of their island lobster pounds as one of his jobs. During this time he met Friendship’s Betty Roberts who became his long-time companion and shared his life, and the remainder of her life, for the next 26 years.
Dick loved the outdoors and throughout his life enjoyed canoeing, hiking, skiing and sailing. Betty and he shared a love of gardening and together they created and maintained both perennial and vegetable gardens at their Friendship home.
Richard is predeceased by his parents; brother; and companion, Betty Roberts, in 2006.
He is survived by his children, Karen Lozier of Acton, Mass.; son, Scott Lozier of Portland, Ore.; and sister, Charlotte Bell of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
Per the family’s wishes, there will be no visiting hours. Private service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
