Robert (Bob) H. McCarthy, 88, of Port Charlotte, Fla. and formerly of Punta Gorda Isles, Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Feb. 1.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on April 8, 1919, he was the son of the late Robert A. McCarthy and Agnes V. Connelly McCarthy, and the husband, for over 61 years, of the late Evelyn W. Rasmussen McCarthy.
He was a WWII veteran, flying 50 missions as a B-24 bomber pilot in the European Theater. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
He had a business career with the JC Penney Co., beginning in Connecticut and New York State, and serving as a store manager in Barre, Vt., Madawaska, Caribou, Wheeling, W. Va. and Charleston, W. Va. He retired in 1978 to Punta Gorda, Fla.
Bob and Evelyn enjoyed many years of sailing, traveling, and summering in Round Pond. Bob also enjoyed fixing antique clocks for his friends and playing the organ.
Bob attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Punta Gorda, Fla.
Bob is survived by his children, Robert H. McCarthy, Jr. and wife Shirley of Lititz, Penn., Timothy E. McCarthy and wife Ramona of Flemington, N.J., Kevin J. McCarthy and wife Frances of Epping, N.H., and Lynn M. McCarthy of Orlando, Fla.; grandchildren, Robert T. McCarthy of Annapolis, Md., Lisa Naples and husband Robert of Lancaster, Penn., Timothy McCarthy and wife Jennifer of Bedminster, N.J., and Michael McCarthy and wife Amanda of Flemington, N.J.; great-grandchild, Bella Naples; brother, Joseph McCarthy and wife Betty of Manlius, N.Y.; sister, Agnes McCarthy of Mantua, N.J.; and many nieces and nephews.
His sister, Muriel Sahm and brother, Jack McCarthy preceded him in death.
A memorial mass celebrating his life will be held in Maine next summer.
