Robert “Bob” P. Scherer, an amazing husband, father, grandfather and friend to many, passed away peacefully on Sept. 16 with his beloved family by his side. Born on Oct. 2, 1932 in Port Jefferson, N.Y. to Henry and Katherine Scherer, he joined sister, Dorothy Scherer Hammond, and brother Richard, now deceased.
After Bob graduated from Bayport High School, he started work as a draftsman at Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island.
He joined the Navy in 1951, serving his country as an electronics technician aboard the USS Corregidor and the USS Tripoli. He was honorably discharged from the service in 1954.
Bob met the love of his life, Penelope “Penny” Ewing in 1954. They were married July 14, 1956 in Sayville, N.Y. So very proud to become a father, son Keith was the first to arrive on the scene with Eric following shortly after. Keith and wife, Susan Arbaugh Scherer reside in No. Windham. Eric and wife, Brenda Bryant Scherer live in Jefferson. Bob was further blessed with grandchildren, Ashleigh, Keith’s daughter, Susan’s sons, Josh and Ethan, and Eric and Brenda’s sons, Kyle and Devin.
Bob was a fisherman, an outdoorsman, and a bit of an adventurer, but he had other talents. He was a creative woodworker and an artistic taxidermist. One of his greatest achievements was the building of his own home. But most loved of these was fishing, and that became his career. He started quahogging on Long Island.
Next they moved to Massachusetts where he became a long liner, tonged for hard shell clams, fished for tuna, and scallops. Moving to Oregon in 1976, he trolled for salmon and fished for Dungeness crab. In 1984 they moved to Maine where he started as crew on a dragger. Next, and last, he became a lobsterman until retiring in 2011.
Always a lover of dogs, his world was not complete unless there was a dog in it, and there were many.
He deeply loved his family and treasured his friends. He touched many lives and made them better.
A celebration of life, a very casual, open house potluck style affair, will be held from 1-4 p.m., Sun., Oct. 13 at his home at 118 Boynton School House Rd., Jefferson. Please be sure to bring a sweater, October can be chilly.
