Robert D. Allen Sr., 88, of Woolwich, passed away peacefully May 6. Robert was born on Aug. 23, 1921, the son of William H. and Methible Pushard Allen. He grew up in Bath and attended Morse High School.
Robert worked for a short time for the Bath Iron Works before entering the U.S. Navy in 1942. On Dec. 2, 1944 he married high school sweetheart Anna Burgess, and they made their home, which he built himself, in Woolwich where they have lived for 65 years.
After leaving the Navy Robert worked for Sears retiring after 21 years of service. Realizing that retirement wasn’t all what is was cracked up to be, he got a job working for the Bath Water District for the next 12 years.
Robert was an avid reader; he always found comfort in reading a good book. He was a very quiet man who treasured the time with his family. He met his great-granddaughter this past winter for the first time and nothing could have made him happier!
Robert is predeceased by sisters, Grace Blair and Alma Litchfield and brothers, Arthur, Marshall and William Jr. Allen.
He is survived by his loving wife, Anna Allen of Woolwich; daughter, Nancy Truhel and husband Carl of Nobleboro; son, Robert D. Jr. of Woolwich, grandchildren, Sarah Truhel and fiancé William Saucier of Jefferson and Jeremy C. Truhel and wife Dr. Wendy Looker of North Carolina; and great-granddaughter, Madeleine Elizabeth Truhel; sister-in-law, Constance Allen of Bangor; and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours for Robert 5-7 p.m., Wed., May 12 at the David E. Desmond Funeral Home, 638 High St., Bath. Celebration of his life 11 a.m., Thurs., May 13 at the funeral home.
