Robert Gordon Nicoll, 87, of Boothbay, died early on March 23.
Born in Greenwich, Conn. on June 9, 1921, he was the son of Gordon and Florence Nicoll. He attended school in Greenwich, Wilbraham Academy in Massachusetts, and Springfield College. He left Springfield to join the Navy, serving during WWII.
As a child, he spent summers at the family cottage at Spruce Point. It was there that his deep love of this beautiful state was developed and it wasn’t long after the war that he made Boothbay his home.
He met and fell in love with Georgia Jones of Damariscotta Mills and they were married at St. Andrew’s church in Newcastle in 1949. For the next 60 years they lived and created their lives in Boothbay.
Bob and Georgia made a great team and together they created Maine-ly Pine Store in Wiscasset, featuring pine furniture that was built by Bob and often stenciled by Georgia. The business evolved over the years into a popular Country Store. They also built and ran the Bold Navigator Restaurant in Wiscasset. After the restaurant closed, the always busy entrepreneur turned the building into a shoe and sweater outlet.
Bob’s favorite part of being in business was interacting with his customers every day. He was a warm, gregarious person, and his grandson Bud said that he was a very easy person to love.
He was an avid sports fan and a longtime active member of the American Legion in Boothbay, and was an enthusiastic Boy Scout leader. He loved kids of all ages and his genuine interest in their lives was evident.
He was predeceased by his wife Georgia in April 2008.
He is survived by sons, Gordon F. and wife Mary of Newcastle, Robert S. and wife Kim Odell of Bath, and Peter S. of Brunswick; grandsons, Bud and wife Heather of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Peter J. and wife Elin of Alexandria, Va., Aubrey of Woolwich, and Scott of Portland; granddaughter, Jane of Brunswick; and long awaited and much loved great-grandchild, Thomas P. Nicoll of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
Donations in his memory may be made to the American Legion in Boothbay.
A memorial gathering will be held at a later date.
