Robert L. Oxton, 89, of Wiscasset, died Nov. 19 at Mid Coast Senior Health Center in Brunswick.
He was born in Beverly, Mass. on April 23, 1921, a son of Leroy M. and Ardelle F. (Harriman) Oxton.
He attended Liberty schools and graduated from Walker Academy in Liberty. On Aug. 10, 1942 he entered the U.S. Army-Air Force. He served during WWII as a mechanic for 11 months in the European Theatre in Northern France. He received the Bronze Star after being injured in an airplane that caught on fire while in active duty. On Sept. 15, 1943 he married Belma M. Simoes. He was employed at an oil field in California, H.P. Small Cadillac and Pontiac Dealership in Bath as a mechanic and was also an aircraft mechanic.
He was a member of the Disabled Americans Veterans and the Owls Head Museum.
He enjoyed flying, hunting, fixing engines and other things in his shop. He was the first person in Liberty to own a Harley motorcycle.
He was predeceased by his wife, Belma M. Oxton on March 17, 2000; son, Richard A. Oxton in 2003; brother, Burleigh Oxton; and sister, Dorothy Hynes.
He is survived by son, Robert S. Oxton and wife Joan M. of Bath; sister, Evelyn Edgecomb of Liberty; grandchildren, Susan Rizzo and husband Mike and Mollie Vinson and husband Jesse; step-grandchildren, Frederick Henry, Johnathon Henry, Misty Murray and Rachel Fisette; great-grandchildren, Jennifer Rizzo and David Vinson; many step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside service 2 p.m., Sat., Nov. 27 at Greenlawn Cemetery in Wiscasset with military honors. Celebration of life will follow at the American Legion on Congress Ave. in Bath.
