Robert S. (Bobby) Holbrook of East Boothbay, passed away on Aug. 2 at the VA Hospital in Togus, following a long period of failing health.
Bobby was born Dec. 8, 1942 in Boothbay Harbor, a son of Stanley R. and Grace E. Holton Holbrook. He was a graduate of Boothbay Region High School, class of 1961.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he enlisted in October of 1961. He held the rank of Bosons Mate, and was a deep-sea diver. One of his missions was to lay cable in the Artic Sea. Upon his discharge from the service in 1966, he returned to East Boothbay and worked for a brief time in local shipyards, where he was proud to have rigged the yacht, America, when it came in for repairs.
On Nov. 18, 1967 he married Martha Jones.
Realizing that working for the shipyard would not provide for his family, he began his career with New England Telephone in 1966. He worked for 34 years through many name changes with the company, retiring early to enjoy spending time with his family.
A familiar sight on the water, Bobby lived to sail and motorboat on Linekin Bay and the ocean. He operated his small mooring and float hauling business, and loved to captain his scow, AHBAH, around the harbor.
Bobby served as harbormaster and selectman of Boothbay for many years, and was a member of the East Boothbay Fire Department, where he was involved in rebuilding the East Boothbay Fire Station. He was well known for his knowledge of Boothbay History.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Holbrook of East Boothbay; son, Jonathan Holbrook and wife Dawn of Augusta; daughter, Sarah Kane and husband Brendan of Boothbay; brother, William Holbrook of Boothbay; sister, Judi Soberg and husband Larry of Paris, Ill.; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral 2 p.m., Tues., Aug. 7 at the East Boothbay United Methodist Church with Rev. Lisa Burger officiating.
Interment will be in the Holbrook Cemetery, East Boothbay, with military honors.
Gathering of family and friends will be at Martha’s home following the service.
Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Boothbay Region Historical Society, P.O. Box 272, Boothbay Harbor, ME, 04538.
Arrangements are entrusted to Simmons Harrington and Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Wiscasset Rd., Boothbay.
