Roland B. Smith, 86, of Waldoboro, passed away peacefully at his home on Aug. 23 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Eastport on Feb. 12, 1926, the son of the late Herbert and Alma McPhail Smith.
He grew up in Eastport and attended local schools until moving to Portland with his father to work in a coal factory. After the coal factory he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served until he was honorably discharged. After serving in the Army he returned to the states and settled in Meriden, Conn. where he would live for over 30 years.
While living in Connecticut he worked for CYTEC Industries in Wallingford. After he retired from CYTEC he moved back to Maine, settling in Waldoboro. Although he always longed to return to Eastport, it never came to be as his health began to fail.
In his younger days he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his brother Al. He enjoyed the history of the United States, especially of past presidents. He loved to watch Westerns and spent most of his last few weeks watching his favorites, Gunsmoke, The Virginian, and Bonanza. He loved animals and was especially fond of dogs.
He was predeceased by sisters, Myrtle Chadbourne, and Frances Porter.
Survivors include son, Ralph Smith of Duluth, Minn.; niece, MaDonna Smith of Newcastle; nephews, Maynard Smith of Warren, and Duane Smith of Waldoboro; brothers, Al Smith and wife Vicki of Weldon, Cal., and Victor Smith and wife Donna of Youngstown, Ohio; and many other nieces and nephews.
Time of visitation 2-4 p.m., Sun., Aug. 26 at the Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. Graveside service 1 p.m., Wed., Aug. 29 at the Hillside Cemetery in Eastport.
