Roland Oscar Haskell Sr., 76, of Boothbay Harbor, died April 13 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor after a long illness.
Roland was born May 5, 1933 in Deer Island, the son of Elmer P. and Beatrice Lucy Eaton Haskell, attended Eggemongan School on Little Deer Isle, and worked with his father lobstering and gardening.
At age 17, he moved with his sister Hazel and her husband Frank Cooper to Boothbay Harbor, where he began working around town in many capacities. His working career included driving a taxi for AP Taxi, the Boothbay Harbor Freezer, driving a truck throughout Maine, janitor at the Boothbay Harbor Grammar School, then he went to work at the Lewis Gulf Station in the 1970s. He retired in 1995 from the Gulf station after 17 years. Roland and friend John Folk walked two miles a day since his retirement, keeping himself as healthy as possible.
He attended the Methodist church and Spruce Point Chapel.
He is predeceased by his wife Vivian Haskell in 2001; son, Dennis Haskell in 2001; brother, Raymond Haskell, sisters, Hazel Cooper and Christine Pert; and good friend John W. Folk Sr.
Survivors include sons James Haskell and wife Ellie of New York and Roland O. Haskell Jr. of Boothbay Harbor; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters, Winifred Tomson of Deer Isle, Lorice Hardy of Stonington, Carolyn Smith of Damariscotta, and Helen Smith of Topsham; niece, Lorena Wentworth of Ellsworth; and special friends, Donna-Marie Folk of Boothbay Harbor and Pamela Kennedy of Boothbay Harbor.
Services will be at the convenience of the family.
Interment will be in Wiley Cemetery, Boothbay.
