Ronald C. Boynton, 75, of Nobleboro, passed away on the morning of March 17 at his home, after a long illness, surrounded by friends and family.
Ron was born in Bangor on Jan. 23, 1937, the son of Marguerite and Sewell Boynton. He graduated from Bangor High School in 1955 and the University of Maine, where he majored in history and physical education, graduating in 1959. He earned his Master’s Degree in Education at the University of Maine in 1968.
His first teaching job was at Lincoln Academy where he taught history, biology, and served as athletic director. In addition, he started the first golf team there.
After leaving Lincoln Academy, he went to Schenck High School in East Millinocket where he, at one time or another, held the positions of social studies teacher, athletic director, basketball and baseball coach, assistant principal, and interim principal.
He then went to Bangor High School as assistant principal and continued there until he had a chance to go to Dexter High School as principal. While there, he also helped coach basketball, a job he always enjoyed.
After deciding he didn’t enjoy being a principal and wanted to work more directly with the students, he returned to Bangor and was assistant principal at Union Street Junior High School. He remained there until he had the opportunity to return to Lincoln Academy as assistant principal in 1979. While at Lincoln Academy he served on the Weymouth House board. He remained at Lincoln until he retired in 1991.
Ron was a long-time member of the Wawenock Golf Course where he enjoyed playing golf at every opportunity.
After retiring, Ron was a ranger and starter at Wawenock Golf Course, coached basketball at Great Salt Bay School, and worked with the Union #74 GED Program as instructor and tester. He helped several former students obtain their GED certificate.
Ron worked in education for 52 years, 32 as teacher and in administration, and 20 in the GED program. This resulted in his working with 3 generations of Lincoln Academy students.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years Melba, of Nobleboro; sister and brother-in-law, Linda and George Paine of Chamberlain; son, Carl Johnson, and daughter-in-law, Maricela of Raymond, N.H.; son, Sean, and daughter-in-law, Jackie of Winchester, Va.; and daughter and son-in-law, Alissa and Jim St. Laurent of Winthrop; grandchildren, Sade Esquivel, Bryan Johnson, Caitlin Boynton, Natalie Johnson, Sean Patrick Boynton; and several nieces and nephews.
Celebration of his life 6 p.m., Thurs., March 22 at Great Salt Bay School in Damariscotta with a time to gather with the family immediately following until 8 p.m.
