Ronald H. Reed, 59, a lifelong resident of Waldoboro, died suddenly on May 7 after a prolonged battle with heart disease. He graduated from Medomak Valley High School in 1971.
Ronnie worked all his life, starting with his father as a young boy, until he took over the family business in later years. He then had children who helped the farm continue to succeed. Now the farm is operating with the fourth generation of Reeds.
Ronnie worked hard doing many different things. He grew squash for the Medomak Canning Company. They did the haying for the beef cattle that they raised. They had laying hens for Decosta’s and Dorothy Egg Farms. There was always snow to plow in the winter; he plowed snow for the railroad and numerous others. He had several rental properties in Waldoboro. His most enjoyable pastime was buying and selling heavy equipment.
He loved the farm and took great pride in its maintenance, often mowing the lawns with his pride and joy, Chupie, in his lap. He had much love for Chupie and he took him almost everywhere he went.
Ronnie was a unique, hardworking man who was always willing to share his opinion. He wasn’t one to hold back punches or sugarcoat things. You certainly knew where you stood with him.
His life was spent working for the benefit of his farm and family. When things got hectic and stressful, Ron could be counted on to come up with a plan. In times of trouble, his willingness to go the extra mile was always there.
He enjoyed traveling through the state looking at equipment to buy. He loved a good deal. He enjoyed talking to people, whether at an auction or in the grocery store. He was a good friend to many.
He was predeceased by his parents, Howard and Marion (Babe) Reed; son, Wesley; and half-brother, Fred.
He is survived by his wife, Sue of Waldoboro; sons, Howard and Travis and wife Sally, all of Waldoboro; daughter, Katie of Waldoboro; grandchildren, Hayden, Desiree, Kaylee, and Alden; four stepsons; a half-sister of Connecticut; and aunt, Ruth of Rockland; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Celebration of life 3 p.m., Sat., May 19 at the farm.
