Roy Johan Johnson, 78, passed away July 3 at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Augusta following a brief illness.
Roy was born Oct. 10, 1928 in Brockton, Mass., the son of Johan and Olivia Haye Johnson.
He was a graduate of Brockton High School and worked briefly at the George E. Keefe shoe factory in Brockton before entering the U.S. Army from 1950-1952. He served in France during the Korean conflict.
After the war, Roy married Elizabeth Peterson and together they made their home in Brockton where he began employment as a bank teller for six years, until they moved to Waldoboro.
In 1959, he applied several trades working as a storekeeper, an assistant funeral director, and at the Waldoboro Savings and Loan as assistant to the president before becoming the CEO and president of that bank for over 20 years. In 1985 he retired and moved to Bennington, N.H. to live on the farm with his second wife, Harriett. Upon her death in 2004 he returned to Maine.
He was president of Waldoboro Federal Savings and Loan Association, Maine Savings and Loan League, New England Savings and Loan League and on the National Legislative Committee of the Maine Savings and Loan League. He was a lifetime member of the Friendship V.F.W., and Past Commander of the American Legion, Charles C. Lilly Post #149 Waldoboro.
While in Bennington, N.H. he was the trustee of the Water Company and the town’s trust funds. Roy served most recently on the Waldoboro Utilities District.
Roy enjoyed playing cards, cribbage and was an avid reader.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Elizabeth Johnson; second wife, Harriett Johnson; sister, Evelyn Perkins; and brother, Eric Johnson.
Survivors include his daughters, Kirsten Mitchell and husband James of North Carolina, and Anna Starrett and husband William of Readfield; son, Carleton Johnson and wife Laurie Starrett Johnson of Waldoboro; grandchildren, Jesse Mitchell of Virginia, Emanuel Mitchell and wife Megan of North Carolina, Gabriel and Haven Mitchell of North Carolina, Eric Johnson and wife Susan of Waldoboro, and Ashley Callan of Readfield; sisters-in-law, Janet Johnson of South Carolina, and Joanne Benson and husband Norman of Massachusetts; and many special nieces and nephews with whom he greatly enjoyed spending time.
Celebration of Roy’s life 1 p.m., Sun., July 8 at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro.
Burial will follow in the Village Cemetery in Waldoboro.
