Roy W. Jones, Jr.,88, of Southport, formerly of Sterling and Hubbardston, Mass., died Dec. 11 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.
He was born Feb. 21, 1918, in Worcester, Mass., a son of Roy W. Jones, Sr. and May L. Styffee Jones.
He grew up in the Indian Hill neighborhood of Worcester, Mass. and attended Indian Hill School. He graduated from Worcester Boys Trade School.
He served in the U.S. Army during WWII.
He formerly worked at Norton Company in Worcester, Mass, and was a construction supervisor for New England Power Service Company in Westborough, Mass. He retired after 31 years in 1980, when he moved to Southport.
He was a member of the First Church of Sterling, Mass.; Seaside Masonic Lodge #144 A.F. & A.M. in Boothbay; 32nd degree member of Scottish Rite, Crescent Chapter O.E.S., Boothbay; Huntoon Hill Grange #398 in Wiscasset; Lincoln Pomona Grange; American Legion Post #54; and The 1918 Club; and he served for many years as a member of Senior Spectrum of Maine.
He enjoyed trains and railroading and was a member of the W.W. & F. Railway Association in Alna. He enjoyed building things big and small, and puttering around his workshop and yard. He especially enjoyed taking road trips around Maine with his companion, Mary Jane Dodge.
He was predeceased by his former wife, Doris C. Jones, in 1991; and sisters, Dorothy Ailsworth and Eleanor Marsh.
He is survived by two sons, Stephen R. Jones and wife Eva of Chowchilla, Cal., and Russell F. Jones and wife Jacqueline of Oakham, Mass.; sister, Marjorie Hartwell of Harwich, Mass.; longtime companion, Mary Jane Dodge of Southport; 7 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Visitation for family and friends 6-8 p.m., Fri., Dec. 15 with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.
Graveside service with military honors 1 p.m., Sat., Dec. 16 at the Decker Cemetery in Southport.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
