Ruby Helen (Thomson) Voorhees, 96, died Aug. 13, in Porter Hospital, Middlebury, Vt.
She was born April 26, 1913 in Westchester County, N.Y., the daughter of John M. and Henrietta (Beaumont) Thomson.
The family moved in the early 1920s to the New Jersey shore.
On June 16, 1935, she married John Harley Voorhees in the Methodist Church of Manasquan. The ceremony was conducted by the groom’s great uncle, Reverend Henry Johnson.
After the honeymoon the couple settled into their new home in Brielle, N.J. spending more than 50 loving years there. They owned and operated the Twin Willow Market and in later years they added another “Prime Cuts” shop in West Point Pleasant, N.J.
Springtime was spent traveling from Canada to Key West, usually with their five grandchildren in tow.
Later years, in summer they could be found at their lakeside camp at Dyer Long Pond in Jefferson.
Besides her parents and only brother, John Martin Thomson Jr., she was predeceased by her husband, retired Brielle Fire Chief John Harley Voorhees.
She is survived by her daughters, Susan (Voorhees) and spouse Robert Montgomerie of Dundee, N.Y., and Marilyn (Voorhees) and husband Johan A. Hansen of Brunswick; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Hansen) Vyhnak and spouse James Vyhnak of Bristol, Vt., Brian Tussel and wife Tamara of Brick, N.J.; Janine Hansen of Damariscotta, Steven Tussel of Brielle, N.J., and Rachel (Hansen) Thelen and spouse James Thelen of West Bath; seven great-grandchildren, two of which, Hannah Voorhees Corscaden, and James Albert Corscaden IV reside in Damariscotta; and cousins, Douglas Jenkin and wife Cheryl of Jefferson and their children.
Services will be private graveside in Greenwood Cemetery, Brielle, N.J. at the family’s convenience.
